Two New Workshops for Therapists on Healing Shame
By: Bret Lyon, PhD and Sheila Rubin, MA, LMFT

Helping Clients Melt the Shame Freeze
Using Somatic Techniques to Create Safety and Build Attunement

Friday, June 7th & Saturday June 8th, 2013 – 10 am – 5pm

Shame is an embodied belief that “something is wrong with me”. Because shame exists in the body as well as in the mind, it is helpful for therapists to work with shame somatically. Clients stuck in shame have trouble seeing anyone but themselves. It can be hard for them to receive support from another person as they are caught in the grip of shame. In this workshop, we will explore how to utilize somatic techniques to connect more quickly with the client and forge a strong therapeutic alliance. We will:

Focus on using breathing and grounding to resource the client – becoming more aware of our own breathing and expanding it in the process.

Learn how we can resource ourselves so that we don’t fall into somatic counter-transference and take on the client’s physical shame patterns.

Explore how to keep our clients more present in the room with us and counter over-verbalization, dissociation and freezing.

Learn techniques and theory from Wilhelm Reich (the father of somatics), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing), Ron Kurtz (Hakomi) and Eugene Gendlin (Focusing).

Sex and Shame

Friday, June 14th & Saturday June 15th, 201 – 10am – 5pm

Sexuality is a vital, defining part of our identity. We are most vulnerable when we experience sexual feelings – and therefore we’re the most prone to feeling shame. We are subject to sexual shaming, beginning in early childhood, when we are most vulnerable to moral judgments from family and society — and to boundary violations from family members and those older than us. Entering our teenage years, we long to be attractive to others and try desperately to “be cool” and fit in. As adults, we seek a partner and try to balance the constraints of monogamy with sexual adventure. In our mature years, our ability to function sexually diminishes and our faces and bodies are no longer as we remember them.

In this workshop, we will offer tools you can use to help clients talk about, explore and heal the sexual shame that can arise at any stage in the life cycle — and help them towards a life-affirming sexuality. We will:

Discover ways to help clients become aware of the many conflicting messages they received about body image and sexuality from family and society.

Learn ways to help clients repair the disconnection between self and others – and between parts of the self – which have been created by shaming, inappropriate behavior, or abuse.

Understand counter-shaming techniques and develop tools for couples to understand their shame triggers and communicate about taboo sexual topics.

Work with the shame that can cause and result from affairs.

Identify challenges in being a sexual minority in society and the layers of shame that can occur.

Unfreeze shame and open life force in a grounded and embodied way, helping clients to access and safely explore their sexual energy.

ADVANCED CLINICAL SEMINAR SERIES 2012-2013

We are pleased to announce that registration is now underway for the Intensive Post-Graduate Program for the spring 2013.
(Please note that this seminar will be scheduled on MONDAYS from 9:30 am –12:30).
The following is a brief description of the seminars which will be offered.

Psychotherapy and cinema (OPQ# RA00363-13) 9 credits

The work of psychotherapists is done in private with only the client. Direct observations of sessions for supervisory purposes are impossible both for issues of practicality and ethics, yet therapists desire and need to share experiences with colleagues for purposes of supervision and self-development. Case discussions with colleagues, are useful but self-reports are marred with subjectivity and fall short of all parties directly observing the same client experience. There is a real need for psychotherapists and their colleagues’ to have a common experience around which to share perspectives on the psychodynamics, the transference and countertransference of the therapeutic work. Cinema as a teaching tool provides this potential. The cinema uses psychologically interesting feature films where the cases are fictional characters to give psychotherapists the shared case for discussion.

Seminar Leader: Dr. Dushyant Yajnik

Dr. Yajnik is a certified family physician and psychoanalyst.
He has worked for 26 years as a humane and skillful psychotherapist, with a prior practice as a CFPC( College of Family Physicians of Canada). He is member of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society (CPS) and the International Psychoanalytic Association

Dr. Yajnik has occasionally served as a resource-person to community clinics, hospitals and
colleagues with a multicultural and immigrant clientele because of his background, experience
and special skills.

Seminar dates: Mon April 29th, May 6th and 13th from 9.30 to 12.30 pm

ADVANCED CLINICAL SEMINAR SERIES 2012-2013

We are pleased to announce that registration is now underway for the Intensive Post-Graduate Program for 2012-2013. The following is a brief description of the seminars which will be offered. This seminar has been accredited by the OPQ (8 credits).

WINTER PROGAM

Individual therapy of the Social Mind

This seminar will explore the theory that through childhood and adolescence, an internalized picture of community is formed in a parallel line of development to that of primary attachment figures. Parental figures have a crucial role in child development, and these early crucial relationships have been thought to lay the foundation for all other relationships is life. Humans are not primarily individualistic beings, but are social animals that evolved to be part of a distinct social community. It is not unreasonable to postulate that our brains evolved to imprint on our experience of “the herd” and of our place in it. To put this simply, we develop a sense of our social group selves in similar way as we develop our sense of our individual selves. In order to understand the psychological complexities that impact peoples’ emotional lives it is crucial, not to just understand the impact of their early family environment, but to have an appreciation of the internalized sense of their greater social world.

Seminar Leader: Steve Rosenbloom
Training and Supervising Analyst at the Canadian Institute of Psychoanalysis and an Asst. Professor in the Dept. of Psychiatry at Mcgill. He has published numerous articles on topics related to psychoanalytic technique and psychoanalytic process. In recent years he has become more interested in the role of examining defense mechanisms in psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic treatments.

Seminar dates: Four sessions, Fridays 10am-noon, February 8 , 15 ,22 and March 1, 2013
