This workshop will provide a foundation for the safe, culturally competent, and critically engaged psycho-therapeutic treatment of transgender individuals and their families.  The facilitators, drawing from a depth of clinical and personal experiences, will provide an overview of the psychological, family systems, and political issues impacting trans people and their loved ones in a rapidly shifting sociocultural landscape.  Basic competencies and frameworks for understanding and responding to mental health issues through the lens of gender diversity, sexual diversity, and anti-oppression will be provided. Evidence-informed practices for the understanding and assessment of identity, cultural safety, discrimination, and family dynamics will also be provided, as will developmentally appropriate approaches for trans and gender nonconforming children, youth, and adults.  Some advanced material on social advocacy and current psychiatric debates on social transition and hormonal interventions, as well as a brief look at the history of transphobia in psychiatry and sexology, will also be explored.  Case studies, experiential exercises and time for a question and answer session will be included. Participants will leave equipped with the information and skill sets required for responsible and respectful interactions with trans and gender-nonconforming clients, to recognize the limits of their knowledge and scope of practice, and to seek out further information of interest.
