Psychotherapists in private or public practice have clients who face changes that they find difficult to address, without having the tools with which to help them. Motivational Interviewing is an effective, evidence-based, client-centred approach designed specifically to help ambivalent people change. Learning Objectives:

Participants will:

  1. Know and understand the spirit of MI (Motivational Interviewing) that is fundamental to the practice. .
  2. Be able to identify and have practices the three phases of an MI intervention (engagement, heightening ambivalence and empowerment).
  3. Be able to develop their skills in using the basic tools: open questions, empathic reflection (simple and complex), affirmations and summaries and will had an opportunity to use other ways to address ambivalence.
  4. Be able to use effective strategies to reduce discord and move clients from sustain talk towards change talk.
