Unconscious Phantasies and the Listening to the Narrative in a Case of Trauma: The story of Jonathan
OPQ Accreditation Number RE02396-18 (3 hours)
The therapeutic task of exploring unconscious phantasies (UP) and pre-symbolic material requires a special kind of listening grown from the inter-subjectivity between the patient and the therapist. Drawing from the detailed account of sessions in a case of trauma, we illustrate the clinical importance of UP and emphasize their primary roots. We trace the origin of their concept since Freud with a particular emphasis on the contribution of Isaacs, Klein, Ferenczi and Bion and describe the earliest role of UP in symbolization. Aside body experience and functions, UP express an important temporal dimension. Examples are given from adult analytic cases.
