Psychical disorders are currently addressed through the perspective of neuroscience. Freud, however, isolated a causality specific to the psychical disorder that we encounter in our daily practice: unconscious causality.
Nowadays, the term unconscious is no longer used in the sense that Freud or Lacan wanted to give it to. It is confused with, or rather reduced, to the non-conscious process. Freud define the unconscious not on the basis of consciousness but on the basis of the speech. The Freudian Unconscious is an unconscious that speaks, one that speaks the truth. Lacan will say that the Unconscious is a fact of the language, it manifests itself through the formations of the unconscious. Further in his teaching, Lacan will place the unconscious among the four-fundamental concept of psychoanalysis. Speaking of the unconscious, Lacan will speak of the subject: the subject of the unconscious who is confronted with its lack of being: the anxieties, the symptoms, situations which escapes of its control, or others which keep repeating.
This seminar offers the introduction to Lacanian psychoanalysis, from the perspective of the unconscious and psychic causality, which gives a different angle on the nature of the symptom and the way it is treated in psychoanalysis.
