Course description

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is based on the premise that human problems and behavior express the unconscious forces and internal conflicts.

Training in psychodynamic psychotherapy requires a commitment to deepening knowledge through reading and reflection; the ability to approach complex material with an independent mind; the willingness to seek necessary resources; and the dedication to fulfill program responsibilities with professionalism.

The second year of the course builds upon the foundation laid in the first term, with introductions to analytic listening, psychodynamic formulation, and termination. The concept of defence mechanisms is introduced, as are psychoanalytic conceptions of personality structures and levels of functioning, and their relevance to treatment is explained, with particular attention paid to strategies for working with narcissistic, paranoid, schizoid, depressive, manic, masochistic, obsessive and hysterical personalities. It was created hand in hand with the OPQ therefore, it qualifies for the Psychotherapy permit courses.

The seminars combine lectures and discussions, based on assigned readings; the seminars are organised in four modules.

This course builds on Psychodynamic Approaches to Psychotherapy Year 1, deepening students’ understanding and facility with psychoanalytic theory and praxis.
